Why does the USPS zip code finder page have a square to enter a zip code?

because sometimes you want the ZIP + 4





not just the ZIP - and typing 5 numbers is easier than spelling

use the "locate a post office" tab

|||Suppose you know the zip code but not the city or town it is in. Type that into the box and presto! You got the place you need.|||Probably because it does reverse lookups as well. In other words, you can determine location from a zip code.|||Well, it's also a post office locator, which I use a lot :-) If you put only a zip, it will show you the nearest post offices for that zip code.
